Postponement of the Freshman Welcome Assembly and Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of A (H1N1)
(Memorandum from Vice Chancellor Elizabeth L. Enriquez dated 03 June 2009)
On the recommendation of the University Health Service (UHS), we regret to inform everyone that the annual Freshman Welcome Assembly scheduled to be held on 9 June 2009 at the University Theater will be postponed to a date to be determined later.
The UHS recommendation is based on the global alert raised by the World Health Organization to an imminent pandemic caused by the H1N1 Influenza A virus, the guidelines issued by the Department of Health (here and here) and an advisory issued by the Philippine General Hospital. In particular, the UHS warns against large gatherings in enclosed facilities where people who may have been exposed to the virus, especially those who have recently travelled to countries where there are confirmed cases of H1N1 or have been exposed to such individuals, may be present and may unknowingly spread the virus while in the asymptomatic stage.
Please be assured that we will hold the Assembly as soon as the threat has subsided.
In the meantime, please refer to the attached advisories and observe the appropriate guidelines. Also attached are posters on proper hand washing. Should you notice and suspect a case of H1N1 infection within your area, immediately isolate the patient and call any of the following hotlines before going to a health facility or clinic:

Virus Alert: Conficker (12 March 2009)
The Conficker Worm (also known as Conflicker, Downandup, or Kido) has been spreading at an alarming rate and has so far infected over 9 million computers worldwide.
The worm, first reported on Dec. 31, 2008, exploits a vulnerability in the Windows Server service (MS08-067) that is part of all currently supported versions of Microsoft’s operating system, including Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Server 2003 and Server 2008.
We are requesting everyone to update your Windows machines to avoid compromising your system.
Prevention:
Make sure your machines are updated and running Service Pack 3 (SP3). To enable Windows Automatic Updates, go to Control Panel -> Security Center -> Automatic Updates, and select your preferred settings. More instructions HERE.
You can also install the ff. patches (specific to your machines):
- Windows XP
- Windows 2003
Removal/Solution:
Users infected with Conficker should run a full-system scan with the latest/updated antivirus software. You can also download, install and run Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool.
There have been new reports of users receiving emails, supposedly from the UP webmaster, asking for passwords. PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO SUCH EMAILS. This is a scam called phishing, and is designed to fraudulently obtain sensitive information such as passwords, usernames, identities, or credit card details, typically for online criminal activities.
Similar emails have been circulating lately, masquerading as inquiries or instructions from Yahoo!, banks, Internet service providers, eBay, or other commercial entities. We strongly discourage users from replying to such emails. If you wish to contact your commercial provider to confirm the authenticity of the email, do not use any of the information provided in the email in question -- use published contact numbers or those which appear in your billing statements.
May we kindly reiterate: We will NEVER ask for your password.
